Modeling monsoon rainfall as a function of onset dates: A GIScience approach
Abstract
This research attempts to predict the rainfall pattern in India by using onset dates of the southwest monsoon. Onset dates (OD) at 21 major cities over the past 30 years are the main input parameters. This study also depicts the spatial distribution of rainfall in India. Wet monsoon annual rainfall (WMAR) data are used for all analysis. The model proposed in this study uses spatial interpolation methods to represent the distribution of WMAR and OD's for India. The rainfall amounts predicted at each major city are used to predict the rainfall pattern for the entire country using spatial interpolation. The model develops a predictive relationship between WMAR and OD for regions and individual cities. Also, climatological summaries of WMAR and OD have been developed.
